Art Classes for Children

Art Classes for Children

PLEASE NOTE THAT I CURRENTLY ONLY TEACH ADULTS

But:

I believe I teach art well, to children aged 7 upwards, and hope previous students and parents think so too, that students have enjoyed my lessons and parents were pleased with what they saw.

Part of that good art teaching for children was that I designed lots of lessons, arranged in logical sequence in programmes.

I focussed carefully on skills and ideas and built those up from one lesson to the next and one programme to the next.

I used these programmes with lots of classes and changed and improved them if necessary.

I have an offer for you:

I would sell you written sequences/programmes of lessons, at your child’s stage, that your child could work on at home with you and maybe other children.

As an introductory offer, at least while I’m finding out how much interest there is and how well it works, your 1st lesson would be free!

You can also get the materials you need for that lesson, if you want to, from me at low cost.

If that 1st lesson works for you and your child, you can buy a continuing sequence/programme (about 5 lessons)* following that lesson.

The cost would be from $30-50, depending on what was involved. You can also buy more materials from me at low cost.

In deciding on a cost for these programmes, I am making them cheaper than sending your child to me in a group.  But they do involve a bit of work for you.

I would be happy to discuss this in more detail by email if you’re interested and after you have tried lessons.

When your children come to me for art classes AND THIS APPLIES TO THE OFFER DESCRIBED ABOVE they participate in my programmes that have been tried, tested and developed over the years – with my background of school teaching qualifications and experience as well as private teaching.

There will be an emphasis on drawing and painting real things in front of them and lots of help to achieve that. There will also be lots of experience using a range of materials, in a variety of different ways. The results will represent the subjects, often much better than children and parents expect, and be interesting, vibrant – and unique – works of art.

I never draw or paint on students’ art and I never give them cartoons to copy. I rarely have them even use photos – there would have to be a very good reason for that. Their art comes from real things or their imagination and in both cases is truly creative.

As well as drawing and painting, we sometimes create collage and sculpture. I often show them my own or reproductions of other artists’ work to inspire or illustrate ideas.

Young children, especially pre-schoolers, often make vibrant and exciting art works from things they know and their imagination. It’s helpful to look at real things and talk about them with an adult but they don’t need to draw directly from real things or teachers to teach them to do this – they just need to be provided with the opportunity and the materials to make art. For this, I’m not suggesting they come to my art classes.

However, sooner or later, some children lose confidence in their art making because their work doesn’t look “real”. Learning the kinds of skills I teach might avoid that happening or be of help if it does. And most importantly, the children that choose to come to art lessons usually really enjoy what I have to offer.
